Week 3
Grief

As we enter Week 3 of our Writing Workshop, we focus on Grief—a deeply personal experience. Having faced my own losses, including the death of my brother, nephew, and many dear friends, as well as the challenges of breast cancer, I’ve learned that grief is not just the absence of someone or something, but the love we continue to hold for what’s been taken. As Stephen Wilson Jr. said, "Grief is only love that's got no place to go." Writing has been a key part of my healing, helping me release, reflect, and make sense of complex emotions. This week, I invite you to explore your grief through writing—whether it’s the loss of a person, a circumstance, or a part of yourself—and find healing and meaning in the love that remains

Echoes of Grief

This week, create a character navigating grief—whether from the loss of a loved one, a personal challenge, or a life-altering circumstance. Use your own experiences with grief to shape this character’s journey.

Directions:

  1. Create your character: Who are they? How does grief shape them physically and emotionally?

  2. Set the scene: Place your character in a meaningful setting that reflects their grief, using descriptive language to highlight their emotions.

  3. Show their journey: Describe how grief affects them, both physically (tight chest, slow movements) and emotionally (anger, confusion, sadness).

  4. Moment of reflection: Include a moment where your character reflects on their loss—perhaps through a memory or quiet realization.

  5. Draw from your own emotions: Let your personal experience with grief guide the character’s journey.

  6. Use vivid descriptions: Bring the scene to life with sensory details and adverbs to capture the weight of grief.
